over boots ¼ mile to Mr Medows - all sick there & one Cabin - Sun just gone down - but pushed on thro' a bottom dark as pitch - being told that about 3 miles we could stop at - we went on very well until we came to a branch of New Yrs Ck &¼ mile or less from ? settlement - when we lost the 2d a head owing to rains by the side of a large Sycamore that lay across - now there commenced our difficulties - dark, the bottom full of water, high banks - sinking sands - thick Brush &c &c Robson dismounted & paddled about in the Stream to find an outlet - none - I was for camping, we had a little dried beef - & the Water of the Stream - We heard a dog; we hallowed like mad & drew the attention of a settlement - And after much difficulty three gentlemen came to our help extracted & took us to their house - a good Supper & kind pleasant acquaintances Made up for our dilemma - When in a Strange Country dont travel at night if you can help it
