& General Wavell talk of the Mexican Army when he crossed these was only 5 inches depth at ford - Alligators & Alligator gars jumping about - Found two lying ? of cottonwood at the crossing - rigged up a raft & got our traps over - camped - We have been out of Meat for some days - Jamson with Larky & water - Today as a treat we have a few spoonful of rice - hog & hominy, Venison only & water are far from inducing poetry - but as Seneca says "It may be all for the best" -
