1866 Wednesday, January 24. Washington, Iowa Cold but not unpleasant. Did little or nothing to day. Engaged in a controversy with Mr. Jenkins &c on political matters. Went around the square making calls where I was acquainted. - At night called upon Dr. McRae & family with Sherman. Saw Squire Wilson & family there. - Have made propositions for a settlement & hope soon to make one with the firm.
