1866. Wednesday, January 17. On the train. - Leave Cairo at 2 AM run 11 miles & ? down & lay until morning. - Cussing in the morning on the part of the passengers. Several cars off the track with considerable of a smash up & a poor prospect ahead. Get off about 2 PM & move slowly forward with nothing to eat except what is picked up at the stores at the stations. A good deal of grumbling. At night take sleeping car & retire with a prospect of a fair nights rest.
