Wherein his writing and orders were. hee sent back two English men and the indian Thomas, on horse back to see at the wigwam where hee lodged to find his papers, these messengers accordingly going back the indian led them the way and ascending up a steep hill at the top where stood the wigwam as soon as ever hee discoved that being not above six rod distance, hee saw two Indian enemies standing at the wigwam unclear to me out, and fower four more sitting by the fire in the house at which sight hee bestird himselfe & Looking Backe called earnestly (as if many men were behind coming up the hill) to hasten away to encompase the enimy, one of the enimy thereupon presented his gun at the Indian But the gunne missing fire; (probably the moist rainy weather had put it out of case) whereupon the Rest of them that were in the wigwam came out & rann all away as fast as they could, suspecting that the English forces were at hand & then Thomas with his two comrades, having thus prudently scard away the enimy they thought in reasonable also to ride backe againe to their company as fast as they could, & indeed there was good reason for it, Because Thomas the indian had only a pistol one of the Englishmen who was their chirurgeon* surgeon a young man, had no gunn, the third had a gunne but the flynt was lost, so they were in ill case to defend themselves or offend the enimy but God preserved them by the prudense & courage of this indian which deliverance one of the englishmen directly acknowledged to me attributing their preservation under God to this fellow so they got safe to their Captaine who in the Interm serching diligently, had found
