Their being no moon. and knowing nothing of the Indians position or number, sent out a party this morning. Febuary 17th 1866 And found that the Indians were a small foraging party. who were out Horsestealing and that they had gone over to Red Willow. creek. Left camp at 8.30. A.M. and marched to head of Medicine creek, and went into camp at a distance of 15 miles from our last night's camp. Wood and Water good and abundant for our command. Febuary 18 Left camp before daylight and marched on our old trail. arrived at Post Cottonwood at 11.30 A.M. Feb 19th. Febuary 19th 1866 Col. R.H. Brown. this day received orders from Sub. Dist- Head. Quarters assigning the companies who had been under his command on the expedition to stations on the Overland Stage Road. Before leaving camp where the Indians fired on us we sent trains to Camp Wheaton under charge of Lieut Dye A.A.Q.M. with Captain Clark and 25 men of the 12th Mo. Cav. for the purpose of bringing the Government stores and property left their in charge of Captain Griffith 6th U.S. Vols. when the command took up our line of march for Cottonwood. The train left camp before we started for Cottonwood. Up to date Feb 19th they have not yet arrived at Cottonwood
