The garison of the fort was about 200 men & 20 guns two of them in casementes of wood [39?] inches thick covered with rail road irons and four 32 lbs. guns then the rifle pits run out for a mile supported by several batteries of Arty. and about 5 [illegible] infantry. The guns of the fort were all silenced but one 32 pds., and that was death to a gunner to load.
