Wednesday 6th 5 pm left for Houston - 8 pm crossed Fort Bar - Thursday 7th Got into Buffalo Bayou like to a canal - the bottom wooded principally [?with?] Pine - [?many?] to sandy soil - fine Magnolias in flower - This is not the land for plantations- too poor - passed the Field of St. Jacinto - [?] is busy - 'A deserted Village' 10 am arrived at Houston - San [two unclear words] - Afternoon went to see Count de [?] & family 10 Miles out up the Bayou - found them in a most miserable plight - sulky & disgusted - The Count though of [?] a plantation here & [2 unclear words] someone in charge - [?] & comes here occasionally - these are too dry lands for Cotton & not wet enough for general farming & more particularly with lands of a Frenchman the future here was distressing utter [?] -
He has only been some 30 miles West to the [?] & up to LaGrange - And has come to the conclusion that "Texas is one bayou marsh - & some holes with water in them "! - Ridiculous - [?] to accompany me to the West -
