This is followed by the "Feather Tail dance" The ceremony opens with a song for the Tail man. this is the dancer who is first permitted to wear the tail as Anakon is spread upon the ground and upon this the man wearing the tail sits the tail spreading over the mat about nine songs are sung then a song is sung to hang the tail on the north part of the center as well as the others The tail man takes the tail and hangs it on the north post and then goes off and dances up to it. and dancing about back and forward finally takes it from the post and offering it to the North. East South & West. ties it upon himself. and dances about the ring while they drum a song. Then the tail is taken in both hands by the tail man. and waved over the drummers. this is done to charge the tail. as it were with the spirit of the drum. The tail wearer. after this dances up to any one of the indians sitting about. and circling about. in front of him. at the proper moment ties the tail to him. If any one does not want to wear the tail he gives a present. if he wish to wear it five times he gives a present to four others. In this dance the indians grow very [?] in their presents. giving away every thing. even a horse if they have one. If they wish to give a horse the donor will take a small switch and present it to the other. Each male on the floor must wear the tail or pay a present. even the youngest pappoose. in line can the tail man puts the tail on his back and some one else takes the tail and dances for him. then they dance up to the tail man. and he unties it and taking it in his hand waves it over the drummers as a bird circling in the air and he goes off to tie it upon some one else. If any one desires not to wear the tail he must give a present and if he does wear it. he must give a present to the one who unties him. If the wearer wishes to wear the tail through four dances he indicates to the drummer. that he is ready to dance another dance by telling them to get on When one dances four times it is the rule to give a large present. as a horse or other thing of value. to the man who unties him after the four dances.
When the end approaches the number of songs to be sung by the different drums (if any visitors are present) is announced by the Chief Speaker. and the flag is taken down and the feathers taken off the Drum legs. The drummer who has finished let the drum down upon the mat that is spread under it. The carriers of the legs each take one
