The garter worn by the Ojibway is the dance was illustrated in chapter IV under the head of bead work. and it only article left for us to describe now is the Dance Leggin of the Ojibway the Dakota. does not wear them. as an adornment for the dance. his use of the leggin is to protect the leg and when he dances. takes them off. It seems to be incompatible with the notion of propriety for a Dakota to dance in any but a nude state. The Ojibway on the other hand. wears as he does the trousers of the white man add to his dance uniform if he has them the leggins. the pair which is from the authors collection and were made at Lac du Flambeau Wisconsin. are a type of the Ojibway leggins. The material is black velvet. Just here let us remark in passing that velvet seems to be a favorite stuff for garments and other articles among the Ojibway. and we incline to the opinion that it is because the velvet has the texture and appearance in a great measure. of a fine fur. the Indian has a fine appreciation of fur. and is prone to use it when ever possible.. This leggin is a conical structure that fits over the calf of the leg. the outer edge is finished with an angular flap. which on the front side is ornamented with beads. The Margin of the leggin is bound in orange & blue braid. and and the figures are wrought in red, white, blue green and yellow beads. we show one side of the leggin the other is similar the figure being carried out. with symetery. [sic] This pair of leggins was owned by [?"Ojan-i-niwa wa. gi ji gon." ?] "The Little Busy Day." and was worn by him. at the "Big Dance" witnessed by the writer. Oct 9th 1891. at Lac du Flambeau.
