over the buggy and said, "Oh, no, you can't because he came out of my Mama's body!" Clara was much embarrassed, especially as Max was sitting on the porch at the time. It will be a long while before she repeats that remark. Fully 9/10's of the people who have looked at the baby have made the same remark to Malcolm and he has countered with various defenses, but this was the first time he ever used the above argument.

Am mailing the Child Welfare pamphlet. Was much interested in your notes on Child Welfare. Might use my experience with Malcolm in your talk, telling how he expected the baby as soon as I knew we were to have one, and always had in mind something to do for him or make for him. Started many little bits of sewing which were usually "a coat for the baby brother." Told him the doctor was coming to help the baby brother "come out" and would have to stay in bed afterwards to rest, because it was hard work to carry the baby around so long. I cannot think of anything easier than confiding in a child at such a time, but it would be a real task to deceive one, and such a bad investment for the future. Must be time for Marvin to nurse - hear him stirring around.

Much love, Katharine
