burden Dumah- (i.e.) affliction & troubles of Dumah- "Watchman what of the night: Watchman what of the night? (i.e.) What period is it, in the progress of the affliction & calamities of Dumah? So likewise, night in the apostles use of it, probably referred to the persecutions & troubles in which the christian church was at that time. Especially for the Jewish nation who took every measure in their power to defeat the progress of the gospel, & destroy its professors & publishers- night might also refer to that heathenish ignorance, superstition, and wickedness, which so generally prevailed in those times.- These circumstances being in the apostles mind he might well call the time in which his brethren were, a time of night, of darkness & gloominess
