From Montgomery to the Trinity river and from thence to Galveston accompanied by Mr F__

November 14th. At 3 PM left the "Court House" It soon commenced raining & pine forests in winter does not afford the best of shelter. reached the farm of Mr Dunlap (who is married to a daughter of the celebrated "Horse shoe Robinson". 15th We had to go many miles out of our direct courses owing to the late rains rendering the fords impassable, but at dusk put up at Mr. H_ plantation. On all the creeks observed many farms & although this part of Montgomery has a sandy undulating soil there is no complaint of a scarcity of produce.

On our road today in passing a log house belonging to a chair maker, my companion who was about commencing housekeeping, entered into an arrangement with the artizan to give him "pigs & small claims? " for chairs - above line: upon some of his neighbors

16th Three miles brought us to Huntsville, situated on a "pine height". This town was commenced in 1836, but made but little progress until 1842? when Mr. Macdonald gave an impetus to building &c, thus making it a convenient market for the neighboring planters & farmers.
