Mr. Hoare was one sent by the authorities of Mas. to negotiate with the Indians for the redemption of Mr. Ronlandsons family. Mr. R. thus gladly relates his arrival among [crossed out: the Nipmuks] her captors. On a sabbath day, the sun being about an hour high in the afternoon, came Mr. [?John?] Hoar, (the council permitting him, & his own forward spirit inclining him) together with the two forementioned Indians, Tom (Nepanet) & Peter (Conway) with the third letter from the council. When they came near I was abroad; they presently called me in, & bid me sit down, & not stir. They they catched up their guns & away they ran, as if an enemy had been at hand & the guns went off apace, I manifested some great trouble, & asked them what was the matter. I told them I thought they had killed the Englishmen. They said, No, they shot over his horse, & under and before his horse, & they pushed him ths way & that way, at their pleasure, showing him what they could do."
