1793 WD 5 mo 6 2 came to us, & we rode about 14 Miles to James Coals & Lodged, the road

                                very rough in Places.
7 3 Rose early and rode about 45 Miles to Peter Roberts.
8 4 Rode about 22 Miles to the painted Post, situate on the River Tioga,
counted about 240 Miles from Philadelphia in about 9 Days, some of the
worst Road I ever travailed, but we got a long pretty Chearfully, the
Commissioners were very king & Respectful to us, the Flats along the River
exceeding fertile, in some of them there appeared old Hills where the
Indians used to plant Corn; but they are now driven to seek Habitation
far distant, & I have received but very little Consideration for their fine
fertile Country, which is to be feared has been one Cause of the present
unhappy Difference between them & the white People.
9 5 Rode to Bath about 20 Miles & fed, in the Evening reached a Bark
Cabbin 11 Miles, here we struck up a Fire, the young Cornplanter
now in his Element, took an Ax & soon peeled as much Bark off
the Trees as made a good dry Floor, we lay down on Blankets and
covered with others, & I took my Saddle for a Pillow, we kept up
a good Fire, but laying in a Bottom near a Creek, & toward
Morning it grew Cool, made our Lodging not very Pleasant,
nevertheless were preserved from taking Cold.
10 6 Rose early & rode 38 Miles to Capt. Williamson's, Agent for
a Company in England, who purchased an extensive Tract of
the Genesee Lands, here we were hospitably entertained.
11 7 We rested ourselves & Horses, got some clothes washed.
12 1 We rode about 16 Miles to Gilbert Berry's, on the Banks of
the Genesee River, a House of good Entertainment, here we met
with the Farmer's Brother, Red Jacket, Little Billy & a number
of others to the amount of about 50, we were glad to see
Conferrence each other, in the Evening we had a friendly Conferrence,

with some the Indians addressed themselves to the Commissioners Indians in particular, & enquired where Beverly Randolf came

from, they were told from Virginia, they said that was a
