Oxen are used as draft animals and are very useful for hauling lumber, being stronger than horses though much slower.

The women are very hard worked, and they seem to take it as the proper thing to have their husbands beat them or come home drunk often.

They do their washing in the streams, pounding the clothes with a wooden paddle to get the dirt out. There are many interesting incidents connected with them and on the whole they are as interesting a people as you could find anywhere.
