unto they made some preparations expending their labor upon clearing & breaking up ground, but some Eng. that lived on those islands & had interest there were unfriendly to them & discouraged them but the authority of ye country did interpose for unclear quiet yet ye poor Ind. were discouraged & in want of all things except unclear which food (as some conceived) did occasion fluxes & other diseases among unclear besides they were very mean for clothing and the islands were bleak & cold with the sea winds in spring time & the place afforded little fuel & the wigwams were mean. In this condition of want & sickness they were after their men were sent for to the wars until mid-May, then god was pleas'd to notify the hearts & minds of men towards them by little & little, partly by the true reports brot to the gen'l court of their distress'd state & the great unliklihood unclear were to plant or reap any corn at the islands, & partly from the success god was pleas'd to give their brethren abroad in the country's service, insomuch that the hearts of many were in a degree changed to those Chr. Inds. & the gen'l court pass'd an order giving liberty to remove them from the islands cautioning their order that it should be done without charge to the count'y. This liberty being given Maj. Gookin, their old friend & ruler, by the authority & encourag't of the rt.
