115 176 & will not admit them so much charity as to think that any of them are sober or honest, such I shall leave to the lord desiring he will give them more charity & root out of their hearts the spirit of enmity & animosity, & it is probable that some persons will not be wanting to caluminate our Chr. Inds. & object, that notwithstdg. all that hath been said on their behalf, yet they are hypocrites & wicked men & will frequently drink & commit other lewdness. To this I shall ans'r in few words I have good ground to believe that sev'l of you are sincere, but I do not say they are all such, & I [?] not affirm for my own countrymen that there are no hypocrits or evil doers among them. I wish & pray thee & bothe Eng. & Inds. were all better than I fear they are, 'tis not my work to judge mens hearts, that belongs to god. & I cannot deny that many of them especially the younger sort that have been & are solds. but they are too apt to be overtaken with drink. I cl'd wish they had not so much example & temptation there unto by some Eng. especially such as have been their fellow solds. in the wars, who are very ready when they meet the Inds. to give or procure strong drink for them & others for filthy lucre's sake, sell them strong drink especially prohibited by law indeed a very little matter will intox- 177
