The land is moderately high, not subject to overflow, but somewhat swampy in rainy weather

owing to a sub stratum of a clayey nature. There an pretty good grazing lands in the country.

 About the pa??es? of the Trinity, Anahuac &c is what is called the residence of "The great nation of geese"  And the numbers of wild geese. Swan, duck, brant, cranes, pelicans & other birds is enormous. The wild white swan has a black patch on the wings, (about the shoulder joint) & the tail is black. Turtle & fish are in abundance, & particularly about the passes numbers of large alligators.
 Dropped down into the pass, but got aground.

31. The Steamer "Vesta" having got off trout? on board of her but blowing hard from S.E. only ran a few miles & then came to anchor.

February 1. Sent a party on shore to cut wood - plenty of game particularly deer. The fresh water of the Trinity generally extends to a considerable distance out into the Bay. At noon came to anchor off the East end of the chain of islands forming Red Fish Bar. This chain of islands are low and sandy, covered with brush wood, with here and there a few trees, they are said to be increasing in size rapidly, & will doubtless on so very distant period elongate the peninsula forming part of East Bay.
