6th - Joined a small party of six for a trip into the Mountains, to Geologize hunt Bear, Bees + fatBacks. We camped for the night near the Eastern springs of the San Antono river, profitably amusing ourselves shooting into turkies as they would come to roost for the night. The moon was near its full - there was not a breath of air but by 11 PM it blew a strong Norther 7th. Journied 9 miles + camped on one of the branches of the Salado [crossed out: passing the 'caves' Deer in great abundance, thus we are able to make hide bags for honey we anticipate to find. Large flocks of turkey-buzzards are hovering about awaiting a feast upon the deer's flesh we do not use; for just now, the "fat ribs" are only eaten. It is said that these birds follow hunters & indians for great distances. The country is undulating, with Post-bark timbers & strewed with 'rotton limestone' with occasionally silacious pebbles. 8th. Had some very rough travelling to the Cibolo* river some 24 miles from San Antonio. The country traversed to-day is hilly, in places covered with
