(Agave Americana)
Maguey - It is this plant that furnishes the Pulque, but ere it is fermented the liquor that exudes from it is called "Agua de Miel" - I am informed that some 20 or more sorts of eatables & drinkables are prepared from this, to use a Texan phrase "E?ent Plant" It is the Mezcal, another species of Agave that ?utes? a liquor of same name - to obtain this drink, the root is pounded, mixed with water and fermented, from which is obtained an intoxicity drink - other parts of this plant is used & by the Indians & even the missions - In the Guadalupe Mts at the foot of which we arrived, or rather into them, saw ?mak specimens of these plants, but on the other side of the Nueces say, above the Pasido Rd they commence & then continue thro' Mexico - Should a failure of Maquey crop happen, it would be a serious affair for domestic trade - (see into this) I do not think "Chicha" as made by the Peruvians & Chilians from "Indian Corn" is used by the Mexicans.
