The Missionaries were generally Franciscans & others of the order of Our Lady of Guadalupe of Zacaticas. About 1800 the Missionaries left Texas, but in that period there were no more indians in the Missions, they having died of; & in a mutilated record belonging to San José more than 1200 deaths of indians are noted down. The three tribes of Texas, Xaramenes & Adaes indians are now extinct, thus this would go to prove that the sort of civilization introduced by the Missionaries did not tend to increase their numbers. The various Missions supplied the garrison of the Alamo with the produce of the soil & catch for which the holy fathers were paid. The Spanish Military were a proud domineering class & considered themselves lords of creation & many are the acts of oppression attributed to them.
