39 Journey from Columbus to San Antonio de Bejar &c - 11th - Left in company by the road that goes through the settlements & not by the main one with Mr L____. Five miles on our way crossed Skull creek, which takes its name from a desperate battle that was fought here between Austins first settlers & the Tonkeway indians. The indians were beaten & their Skulls & bones remained at this spot for years. In crossing the Western fork of the Navidad river, we discovered a chalybeate spring running into the stream. There is some pretty country on the Navidad, sufficient timbered & well suited for corn, cotton & stock; on it & small tributaries, there is trout, perch, catfish, & game we saw deer, wild turkey, prairie hens 12th There are thunder storms daily, some rain but the nights are fine. Put up for the night at Mr. F __s plantation on Nixons creek, which runs into the Navidad. Mr. F __ has a race-course on his land & a great [?amateur?] in horse flesh. His house a very fine
