me good to feel there was some one who could remember past kindness & whose soul was not entirely immersed in the one idea of gaining money. Ed's being from a different State has been the cause of a good deal of jealousy, & others less deserving have been put over his head; but in spite of this he is steadily rising, & is eventually sure of success. The only trouble is that it is hard to live in this climate on $75 per month, as the Doctor's bills alone almost come up to that Ed was very much gratified to find that no one in the Office was able to do his work & since his return he has had no end to the little acts of kindness and attention shown him, altho sick for three weeks he will draw his regular pay & hopes soon to have it increased, as every one now acknowledges his ability. You have no doubt heard of, & been grieved to hear of the sudden death of Judge Settle. I enclose a notice of it from the Greensboro Workman. There is no doubt now that Col [unclear] will have to go out of office, as he has made himself so unpopular -- Please
