your a/c to July 1st 83, also draft on New York to your order for nine hundred & eighty eight dollars and twenty cents (#988.20) to cover amount your due. I also send to you by this mail a copy of "Our Wild Indians" in good binding for your own library. It looks well to say "from the 31st thousand, on the fly leaf. The sale of the book is about over. For the past three month orders have been light & have been growing smaller & less frequent, rapidly. I doubt whether I can ever squeeze the sale up to 33,000. I have exhausted every effort & spent a pile to make the book go, and I trust you are satisfied with the result. It is better to sell 31.000 and then be able to say that the book was a success in point of sale, than to number the sale by a few hundred as Putnam's did on your other book. You have had fair compensation, too, for your labor; but I have made nothing on this vol. With best wishes for your welfare and prosperity believe me to remain Sincerely Yours
