Men and women among the Dakotas envelop themselves whenever practicable in a robe of buffalo skin. That at least was the case in days of yore. Such robes were elaborately decorated with hieroglyphics of mens and animals; chiefly horses, and depicted the exploits of the men in his war parties or other achievements. Now however the source of supply being inserted - cut off, the bison being extinct. the indian is reduced to the use of a blanket, which he procures from the white man. The blanket being a ? natural for ornamentation with paints, the effect sought is inked upon a strip of lambskin, or leather if
