Teusday January 29th 1850 ALthugh this morning was cloudy we went down to the island as usual. In the afternoon a dark and threatening cloud arose in the west. We took the hint and made preparations to decamp. but the rain caught us. and a general retreat was beat by the whole body of miners. The accompanying wind was from the SW. Here is a fresh sign that the rainy season is about over. I fled to the log house for shelter. Eddy was quite indisposed. Feeling uneasy during the night. and being unable to send for me - he called in Dr Scott from the next door. Dr S- gave him a little camphor and my friend paid $16.00 for the visit.

This has proved our best day at these mines. Receipts $24.50 Really our hole does bravely. It makes us labor yet it pays us very fair wages. The effect of mining is rather singular. In the states $2.00 per day would be deemed good wages. Here we make $8.00
