Cantonment Reno Decr 2d 1896 Reveille as 5.30. Broke camp at 7.20. Ice hardly strong enough so I built a bridge of logs & poles over it for the men to pass over—. Very cold morning — & the wounded? got off late. I remained by my camp fire- until 8.30. Came direct while the road was very round about. Killed two Sage Grouse with rifle— Wounded another- Ought to have got more. Long & hard march - arrived 4 pm- Cmd half an hour later- Camped on the old ground. No mail.
