Another witness however stated that a squaw cut the throat of this infant and herself threw its body into the road. "Jack Smith", a half breed, son of John Smith, the interpreter, was murdered the next day after the attack, while under guard as a prisoner. Beckwith testified that "Jack" was shot while sitting in a lodge near him, a hole being first cut in a (wing?) of the lodge, so that a pistol could be levelled at him. Captain Soule testified that before "Jack" was killed, Lieut (Damm?) asked Col Chivington if he objected to his being killed, and that the Col. answered "You need not ask me that."
