Sandy Creek. Their village consisted of over one hundred lodges, and numbered five or six hundred persons - about two thirds of whom were women & children. Colonel Chivington marched out in the night, his command consisting of 1st & 3rd Regts. Colorado Vols., and Major Anthony's Batallion from Fort Lyon. Reaching the Indian Village about sunrise on the morning of the 29th November, he halted his command and ordered "Strip for action." He then addressed to his command the words "I do not tell you to kill all ages and sexes, but I do tell you to look back on the fields of the Platte, where your mothers, brothers, and sisters, have been slain, and where their blood soaks the ground." An order was then given to advance. An American Flag was at this time observed flying over a lodge - afterwards found to be that of "Blk Kettle" - principal Chief of the Cheyennes, and a white flag was seen immediately afterwards. I.P.
