2 S. WHITELEY'S INSURANCE AGENCY. POST OFFICE BUILDING. TELEPHONE 168. Racine, Wis.,..........188

him in the highest terms to President Lincoln in 1861- a letter which he never had occasion to use. The gentlemen named comprised the Republican delegation in the House, at that time. The night the rebels fired on name Mr. Whiteley enlisted in the Cassius M Clay Guards for the defence of Washington City- as is shown by his certificate from the War Department I have seen a letter from Simon Cameron, written shortly after he retired from Lincoln's Cabinet, speaking of Mr Whiteley in the warmest terms of personal friendship, and as being under lasting obligations to him. President Lincoln in 1862 appointed him to an Indian Agency for the purpose of inducing him to go to Colorado to help bring that territory into the Union at the same time that Nebraska and Nevada were admitted. In that fight Mr. Whiteley was the Secretary of the Campaign Committee. They carried the Movement. Andrew Johnson interposed his veto- and the treacherous vote of James R. Doolittle was required and given to sustain it. Ex Governor Evans and US. Senator Teller certify to Whiteleys ability and good work while in Colorado. In 1868, Mr. Whiteley had charge of the Presidential Campaign work in Racine on the Committee with Judge Dyer.
