SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 1863. Finished our hut, made bunks making it very comfortable. We made our bunks out of poles and then put pine brush on them. Had co drill from 8 to 10 AM and dress parade in the evening.

SUNDAY 22 Snowed most of the night and all day. Was wakened up before daylight to go on picket. 13 men; 3 corps & a sargent of our co. Went out with 40 rounds of cartridges and 2 days rations, to the line 1 1/2 miles from the Rapihannoc. Being in the advance only a capt & 2 pioneers before me It was hard marching

MONDAY 23 This picket business is hard work, but keep in the best of spirits. We are near a secesh home and have been using his rails for making fire. This morning the guard at his home threatened to shoot us if we did not quit taking them, I am out at a post with 3 men.
