I knew of arms having been loaned by the late special agent, which belonged to the government, to the trader at this agency, to sell to Indians, To which I answered, that I had heard that such had been the case; as I understood by W H Fautons own admission to the agent F.J Mitchell, and that the fact of Fauton's inability to turn over four Winchester Carbines, after having transferred them by Inventory, and taken a receipt for them, until he went to Benton about the 1st of July, when he delivered two to the agent, and did not deliver the other two until about the 10th of August, when passing Fort Peck on his way down the Missouri river on the Steamer Benton, at which time he landed from the boat and delivered them in person, went to confirm that opinion. They had the appearance of being unused, and seemed to be in the original shipping wrapping.
