Lt Hardin, N.S.a. and a squad soldiers belonging to the 6th NJ Infy, stationed at the Post of Benton arrived here on the 11 th inst for the purpose making an investigation in regard to the selling of arms and ammunition by the trader at this fort. The statement of Thos. O'Hanlon trader in charge Alexander Culbertson interpreter for the Agency, and myself were taken.
Lt Hardin alleges that the late special NS Indian Agent for this, their special agency, pursuant to special telegraphic orders from the Department of the Interior, applied for a military escort which was furnished him from the post of Fort Benton and sent his representative Edward unclear to unclear and sealed up all the ammunition in possession of J G Baker & co and forbid the further sale of arms and ammunitions, and that it was reported that the firms of F C Powers and Bro were allowed to continue the sale of the same without restriction.
