westward to find the road. Found it. Sent an orderly to see where Spaulding was - & then turned north - went about a mile and a half & went into camp, in a lovely valley. 

 There is something I've unclear in the idea, that we stept where no foot of white man ever trod before - Yesterday I felt it on the peak of our discovery - which I shall name Fred's peak, as he was first on top --
