she is older, has more just ideas of things & really has been making much effort to improve; I was much gratified today by hearing that the older brothers think that a great improvements has been brought about in the two little girls the past year, a great & happy influence is attributed to me, which of course cannot fail to be pleasing to me. I wish you could peep in upon us in our bright cheerful room this evening. The doctor sits opposite me reading the ov.yr.? 'daily Times' Hattie is practising, Libby studying, & Fanny in the corner rocking her boy to sleep: We are in our new, enlarged rooms; a large open grate in the fire place & the solar lamp lights up the room most cheerfully and how I wish you could all of you step in this evening and see us.

 Our grapes are gathered, a parcel put down in sawdust, some made into preserves, and a few, reserved for eating. Tomorrow, Susan & I are going to make some guiness marmalade, instead of preserve because it keeps better. I heard about a new book the other day from a young lady who is acquainted with the author: it was sent to the publisher (Derby ary?) who said it was a 'work of merit', but not large enough, & requesting 100 pages more, saying he was ready to stereotype as soon as that could be published: I should not think it a very small job to be required to sit down & write 100 pages to order; however the author did it, & the book is I suppose soon to be out. I hope I shall see it. We have two vol. of Ecleatio's? bound pretty volumes
