Dear Aunt Esther
I have thought of writing to you often during these years that have passed since you and I have met, but from various causes I have suffered the purpose and wish to do so, to remain useful-filled. Now my letter bears heavy tidings, which I suppose have reached you already by letter from brother Isaac. The death of mother is a sudden and most afflictive blow to us : we looked not for it. - we hoped she might live yet for years to come. her constitution was naturally fine, and her health generally good, especially, she was active and engaged in all the affairs of life, full of works of use and benefit to others, taking her share in life's enjoyments, and its burdens too.
