May 5 Mond morn.
Joseph I am afraid you are so hurried with your affairs that you did not understand what errand I wished you to do respecting the Schools. I received a letter from Mr. Stevens a fortnight since requesting to know simply whether I was engaged, and whether I would take that school but he was not authorized to make any bargain and did not mention any price - now I did not write an answer to him but sent an answer verbally by you, which, if you failed duly and seasonably to deliver, I rest under the imputation of a great breach of politeness and respect with regard to Mr. Stevens - this you may suppose I am very unwilling to suffer - therefore if you have not faithfully spoken with him about it you must immediately, and explain the matter so that he will have no reason to think himself ill treated by one something in yours by Mr. Sargent led me to fear that you overlooked the answer to be given to Mr. Stevens if so, I want you should at once let him know the facts;
I have received no direct application yet but only an inquiry whether I would take it, - now if they want me and are pretty unanimous in it I will take it for $200 per week, but not for less - or if there should be a fair prospect of a good private school for three or four months instead, I should like it better, they may try to do this if the district are unwilling to give me my price.
