men at best but in a totally unknown country might possibly be made of use by sending them forward to look out routes - I have one so called guide, Joe Merivale, who was in the Hills 30 years ago & who knows no more about them than a New York Dandy. He has nothing to do as guide but I keep him as interpreter in case I should meet Indians. The country passed today has been very beautiful - It is certainly remarkable for the fertility of the soil of the valleys. - for its picturesque beauty & for its timber
