on the other side of the river. May 16th The Col. took all the citizens strikers cooks &c and went up on the mountain and brought down the log that the Lt had cut for the flag staff. Two crows came infrom the village. They say they know nothing of there being Arapahoes over on the road. May 17th The camp was all astir just after daylight from seeing 6 men coming down the road from Phil Kearney. All supposed they were bringing a mail. They proved to be deserters from Ble 18th, the same ones that Genl N? W? sent us word about. They left P.K. on the 1st inst. and had been wandering around since, stoping 3 days in the Crow Camp.
