but from all indications the seasons must be so short as to prevent the raising of any grain or produce except grass. If the country is not mineral it is worth but little - Two months of summer & ten of winter is not a good climate for settlers - Distance today 12 1/2 miles - Considering the country our road was excellent & I have received congratulations from several of the offs. on our success so far especially in today's march. Geologically we are getting low to the carboniferous formation. May get to bed-rock soon --
