terminating in the valley of Spauldings creek bounded on each side by mountains over 1000 feet. At our feet a vast plain apparently limitless to West & N. West. On the north some miles ahead a belt of timber - on our immediate right - or east- an impassible chasm of 500 feet & on the other side of it mountains rising up 1000 feet yet higher & covered with a dense forest of pine. Seven miles from camp the trail led to the breech of the chasm & we found all the sides not actually precipices covered with quaking
