On the first of November 1866 I went out of office. That rare unclear, Andrew Johnson, acting President of these United States reformed President Lincoln's appointees out of office and his own particular unclear in, and my occupation as tax-gatherer was gone. I did not regret this, as there was nothing to recommend the position except its unclear advantages, and this was more than counterbalanced by the by the hard and difficult fight which had to be waged continually against vice and fraud, and the liability, at any time of having to meet false accusation and slander. I tried to do my duty, and if I failed in any respect, or took any wrong means in doing it it must be laid to the charge of want of judgement, or the weaknesses of the old man, and I can only say, may the Lord forgive me.
