Why here in N.H. it is justly considered matter of congratulation both to Railroads & to Farmer where it can be found that Rocks are dirty. Where they are not in some degree so the ground is worth little for tillage, and is commonly pastured!

You wish I could get a situation in the A.& St.L. R.R. So do I, and I have somewhat regretted since that I did not at least try there last spring before accepting a situation where I now am. Still, it would probably have been almost or quite impossible to have put me in any situation where I could learn or get ahead faster, get more experience than I have this season.

You propose for me a "short jaunt" in preference to going home. Well I get such occasionally; and am more like to get more, than to get the opportunity to go home. Monday last I went to Boston, & came back the next day. Friday I went up to Bradford 25 or 30 miles the other way. This last was however the most profitable "jaunt" I being retained as witness or counsel by one of the parties to a controversy at a great hearing to decide Location of Depot in the Concord & Claremonet R.R. Having lately made extensive Surveys in that region I happened to be acquainted with the Levels etc. of that vicinity. So my expenses etc. were all paid, and an additional fee of V which I suppose might just as well have been an X or two if I had thought best to demand it. However, it did not hurt me, & I get the usual pay for my time on N.H.C.R.R., all the time If I can get away I shall like much to go to Waterford, on divers accounts.
