Samuel Metcalf moved from Franklin or Framingham in Massachusetts in 1787. and settled in Croyden N.H. He was one of seven brothers, the youngest of whom was Peletiah, supposed to be the one "who settled in Royalston, Mass."
He had also five sisters. Said Samuel Metcalf had three sons, one of whom moved into the adjoining town of Newport. His posterity are all in the Vicinity. Croyden Claremont, Newport, Cornish, except one who is an Episcopal Clergyman in New York. Obed, Samuel Silas etc. are names common among them.
This information is derived from Silas Metcalf, a Grandson of Said Samuel Metcalf, who lives in the North part of Newport N.H. Said Silas Metcalf has a Nickname of "Horse Head" or "Horseface" from the really extraordinary length of his face & head. I never saw his equal in this respect. His face is extremely long, and his head very high above it. He says he varies a good deal from his relations who are mostly rather thickset and round featured.
This Silas Metcalf, "Old Horse Head". is a man very well reported: of good property, apparently intelligent and intellectual. Selectman, Representative etc. "Every one speaks well of him." I judge him to be a Baptist. I saw there more books & newspapers than is common in Farmer's houses. I dined at his house, on survey, Sept. 24, 1849
