Although considered by some a lazy man, I never was, nor never could be idle; and in saying this I am not egotistical, for it is the truth. This desire to be always doing something led me, at this time, to experiment, and I improved my process for printing on oiled surfaces, and discovered an excellent remedy for unclear and unclear, curing myself of these diseases after fifteen years suffering. During these three years I also wrote a "Cyclopedia of Photography," containing over one thousand pages. This I have not yet published. The Lord was now dealing with me in great mercy; for I was very rebellious against Him, and sought every means to banish every right principle from my mind, by nightly visits to the concert saloon, billiard rooms and theatres. I had made up my mind that it was no longer of any use for me to try to get an honest living, and I threw myself in the way of the depraved characters found in these places expecting that I should receive some proportion from some one of them to join in his iniquity. I was ready for anything except highway robbery and murder. I now believe that God withheld their tongues. Even the "pretty waiter "girls," who were so lavish of their affections and amiabilities on others, kept aloof from me. None, perhaps, will read these pages
