he was stationed at El Paso, Texas, and after the expiration of his furlough he was detailed to the unclear service at Dayton, Ohio. Here he was taken ill with inflamation of the lungs and was removed to the residence of our sister Marion in Cincinnati. At this time my dear mother was with me in New York, and on receiving information of his illness I accompanied her home. We arrived only in time to see him die in an unconscious state. He did not recognize us. This was a source of great regret; the more so as we had seen so little of each other during our manhood. I sincerely loved James with a brother's whole love, and felt his death severely. Indeed man never did have, and never will have more loving, or better beloved brothers and sisters than I. In looking back upon my boyhood I can recall but one instance when angry words, or ugly deeds ever passed between any of them and myself; an in that instance the fault, entirely, was the sufferer, for then, in a violent fit of passion I nearly killed her by slamming a door upon her and driving the latch into her head. Although she suffered severely, her sweet forgiving nature, and her affectionate pleading saved me from deserved punishment. Then there is my dear sister Marion, and almost equally dear brother Josiah, I wonder if they can remember any unkind words that ever passed between us. I cannot.
