As for myself I do not know as I have any thing special to write about myself This continues to be a great country. My brains are hugely vexed, and my mightiest energies physical & intellectual daily & most severely taxed in twisting Rail Roads in to it. I tell Everett & Simonds that I am more & more convinced of the great foolishness of those in authority in sending so young & inexperienced Engineers into so difficult a country. However I find that I learn something every day and take courage. I appear to be left entirely to my own destruction or go ahead. Mr Chase, our Chief engineer, has not even been near us since the very day we commenced here. My health is as usual perfect. Though it is getting perhaps more & more sickly around every where. Two of my posse are sick, one with a typhoid Fever, another with Bowel complaint. Tomorrow I move my head quarters probably for a few days to the Lake Village in Newbury N.H. and then to Newport, which is quite a fine town, shire town, & the residence of the distinguished Lawyer, Ralph Metcalf formerly N.H. Sec. of State &c. By the way I believe his Law Partner bears the same name as Chas. H. Metcalf; Daguerrian Partner. Goddard. My friend Mrs. Amos Piper of Northfield Mass, formerly of Guilford Maine, died recently. This has been written by I.S. Metcalf
