This we succeeded in doing; but, taking advantage of our agreement not being in writing, and the offer of a layer rental, our landlord repudiated it, and because we would not acceed to his terms, he, after several weeks of dispute sold us out, and I was again adrift upon the world. For the next three years we picked up a precarious living by writing for the Newspapers and for the theatre, and by coloring pictures for a magazine. I wrote three plays for the theatre all of which were accepted, but failed to appear either in consequence of change of management, or the death of the manager. With my newspaper articles I was more fortunate. Everything I wrote being published and well paid for. The sketches of character already transcribed into this Journal were among them. Many others which were written from memory, and others taking off the events of the days in which they were written, not having been recorded in my note book, are lost to me - two or three only being now in my possession, and which I shall transcribe. The plays, although considered clever comedies and burlesques, as well as fair literary attainments, I do not now think worth the time and paper necessary to transcribe them. Let them go to the dogs.
