Recitation Room for Prof.Smyth. $4,00 and I saw some wood, say $4.00. My board last term was only $10.25. If I can get a school, on in some way warn some money next fall, I think I can get along somehow another year. This term makes a year I have been here, & if I get rid of $26.25 of extra bill for advance standing, I can go away not more than $20.00 in debt!
I can support myself here for a year, 3 term with less than $75.00 I believe, except clothes etc. There are many spend $3,00 to 5,00 per annum in all.
I shall hate dreadfully to be about next fall term. I want much to get a knowledge of German, & it is important I should. For that next fall is almost all important. As for your present situation I should think it a very good one, and advise you to keep it if possible. Aim to understand your business thoroughly & to suit your employers. As you have so good a chance open to you there, you had better give up your idea of getting business as a surveyor pr engineer, though I think you would succeed well at that, if you could only get into it which however is difficult & perhaps uncertain.
You will need to take especial care of your health, not being accustomed to so much confinement; not that you are in danger of losing your health, for your constitution is good, but confinement etc. will detract from that robustness & hardihood of constitution which is a young man's best possession. Take out of doors exercise when possible. I advise you, every Sabbath afternoon, after Church, (in your situation), to walk, walk out into the Country, anywhere, walk 4 or 5 miles, say from 4 oclock till 6. or 6 till 8. t'will do you good, and your thoughts may be well employed. Another thing I take the liberty to advise you, if you stay at Bangor, to pay attention to dress, dress well. I should advise you in one way & Eliab in another; your cases are different. To you I say, dress well, like a gentleman. I don't say be extravagant, some are, but dress like a gentleman, not a dandy to be sure
